Thank you for your interest in Maryland Voices! We have a vibrant legacy of sharing true stories of Maryland’s teens.
We started out as The 9/11 Project a few days after the attacks against America on September 11, 2001. In the year that followed that horrible day, we collected the reactions and reflections from Maryland residents of all ages across the state. In September 2002, we published September Eleven: Maryland Voices (published by the Baltimore Writers Alliance).
The following year, we narrowed the focus of Maryland Voices to teen writing, and we published our first volume (32 pages) of creative nonfiction, created entirely by students. For the next 7 years, our student-run publication grew to a formidable journal, selecting the best 50 pieces of creative nonfiction by high school writers around the state. At our peak, we were receiving over 300 submissions for each volume.
In 2009, we suffered a sharp decrease in student editors and published our last issue of Maryland Voices. Since then, we have attempted to revive interest in the publication. Today, I, the project adviser, am happy to announce that we now have the support from other teachers and young writers/designers to revive this publication.
We look forward to sharing more information about Maryland Voices. We will be providing materials for teachers and student writers, and we hope to have our first writing conference soon.
Thanks for your interest in writing and teaching creative nonfiction. We are here to support you in sharing the authentic stories that matter the most to you.
